The Special Instructions of the Technical and Vocational Education Authority: The Field of Access for the Blind and Deaf to Education
To provide access to education for the blind and deaf, 16 educational centers in the Special Education section of the Technical and Vocational Education Authority are active. In these centers, more than two thousand blind and deaf students, including girls, are engaged in education. These centers include two institutes and 14 schools in Kabul and the provinces.
In the blind section of special education centers, 580 blind students, including 397 males and 183 females, are engaged in education. Also, in the deaf section, 1,490 deaf students, including 952 males and 538 females, are studying.
How is education in special education?
In centers dedicated to blind students, teaching is done using educational materials in Braille and computer tools. Hemayoun Azizi, an instructor at the Institute for the Blind in Kabul, says that special computer tools for the blind are provided to students, and they learn through sound. In the Institute for the Blind in Kabul, 250 students are engaged in education. This institute has three departments: Islamic education, general education, and vocational and technical education. In the Department of Islamic Education, students memorize the Holy Quran and learn other Islamic education. In the general education section, school subjects are taught. In the vocational and technical section, blind students learn skills such as weaving.
In centers dedicated to the deaf, teaching is done in sign language. Educational materials in sign language, including books, are also available to deaf students. Additionally, deaf students are engaged in arts such as painting. Recently, a short-term tailoring course has been held at the Institute for the Deaf in Kabul. It is planned to expand this program and its fields of study will also increase.
